computer advice

Postby JanJaap » Sun Jul 25, 2010 11:21 am

Basically my mothers computer has become senile* and I'm using that to get myself a new computer so she can have my current one.

My wishlist is:

A SSD for the system disk just because of the want factor.
It has to be silent when pretty much doing nothing, my current one has a .
It has to be able to run tm, bf2142, autocad and 3dsmax.

max. prize: 1500 euris

That's about it, let me hear your ideas

*It does start up however it has no network, it takes ages to start things up (AVG nearly took an hour from my command to start a scan to actually start scanning), usb ports don't recognize any new hook ups and it has the classic startmenu.

Sorry for late reply, I lost the yellow note. :?

Anyway my mothers pc isn't slow nor have I noticed that avg slows a pc down (when it is not scanning that is).
In fact I know I know the solution I'm just not looking forward to spending hours installing updates and service packs.
So unless any of you got a solution this side of the thread can be ignored.

Now I'm still looking forward to your opinions about what would be a good collection of components for the budget specified and can last for +/- 6 years.

I attched a scan of this months gamesystem-of-the-month advice from PC Gameplay Magazine. For 1500 euro you should be able to buy a super pc these days. Although lately prices have gone up a little for the high end stuff. I wouldn't recommend spending 600 euro on a graphics card for instance.

So do you want to build a system yourself? You could also let a computershop do it. Shops like Paradgit have the option to compose your own system and they build it for you.

And don't expect a pc to last for 6 years. I was also in that illusion untill my mobo fried after only 2.5 years of duty. So only with luck it could make it that long. ;)

So the gamesystem-of-the-month advice uses two 1TB disks in raid. So you'd have to replace that with a ssd for the system disk and a normal hdd for data. I would go for the Western digital 1TB, Caviar Black, SATAII,7200rpm,64MB. I'm also getting it :)

If you're going for a Paradigit PC you're dependant on what they have to offer. For instance, they don't have WD hdd's so you'd have to go for Samsung or Hitachi.
I composed a system on their site and took this system as basis: http://www.paradigit.nl/PARADIGIT/produ ... fault.aspx

And added/changed:

HDD:
Intel X25-M SSD 80GB 25 [€ 129,00]
1 TB Samsung Spinpoint F3 7200rpm [€ 64,99]

Graphics card:
ASUS RADEON EAH5850 DIRCU/2DIS/1GD5 [€ 149,00] or ASUS RADEON EAH5870/2DIS/1GD5/V2 [€ 249,00]

I would go for either the 5850 or 5870. Mind that the 5870 is 100 euro more then the 5850.
Benchmark 5850 vs 5870: http://www.overclock.net/ati/705552-585 ... marks.html

Power Supply:
700 watt instead of 600 watt just to be sure [€ 50,00]

Total price: € 1.571,99 (with 5850)

Btw I cant promise its silent. Most pc's have at least 4 fans so only watercooling will solve it for 1000 euro extra. :D

Thanks for the great reply, I'll look in to it.

Btw I don't think your motherboard is a norm because all my PC's (my current is the fourth one) have lasted longer than that. In fact my second one (a p3 733mhz) was only replaced 4 years ago by, indeed, my third one* (an AMD 2400) and only because it couldn't play the newest zylom games.
Heck my current one is a second hand as well and is TTBOMk pushing 5 years.
So yeah, I don't think a 6 year life expectancy is unrealistic.

*yep if there is need of a new computer in my family, I buy the new one and they get my old one.

I picked my new system up today (ordered it last Thursday at a local shop) and its awesomely fast.

Specs:

ASUS P6X58D ATX
Pentium i7 2.4ghz
4 gb ram
90 GB SSD
ATI HD5770
700 watt PSU
Coolmaster centurion tower
Win 7 premium

The only problem I'm currently having is that my monitor, a Samsung SyncMaster P2470, somehow doesn't work with the video card.

I've tried every cable combination but my monitor still claims there is no signal, so I'm stuck using my dad's freshly bought asus 19 inch monitor.
